Officer and a Gentleman, An
1982
Foley: In every class there is a joker who thinks that he is smarter than me. In this class that happens to be you isn't mayonnaise?
Foley: Mayo I want you D.O.R. Mayo: No sir. You can kick me out, but I ain't quitting. Foley: Get in to your fatigues Mayo cause by the end of weekend you'll quit.
Lynette: Damn You! Goddam You! Nobody D.O.R's after eleven weeks! Nobody!
(Referring Della Serra's haircut) Foley: This here my idea of an ass bandit. Wait til the girls get a look at you scrotum head.
Byron: I'm out at sea three weeks a month and when I'm back at port I don't have time for this daddy stuff cause that's not who I am. Young Zack: That's okay, sir Byron: Wait a minute kid you don't understand. I'm too old for this. I don't care what the navy says this is not a place to bring up a kid your better back at that state school in Virginia. Young Zack: I'm never going back there. They treat me like shit. Byron: Maybe that's not for you to say. Goddamit! don't look at me that way what happened to your mother had nothing to do with me. Young Zack: It did you said "You were gonna come back. You promise. Byron: Is that what she said? That's a female lie. That's bullshit! That's a lie! Young Zack: I found your letters. I read them right after she did it. You said "you were gonna come back for us". You said you loved her and she believed you. Your a liar!
Mayo: I am talking to you, motherfucker! Foley: What did you call me?
Worley: Look at them bodacious set of ta's ta's.
Foley: There's not gonna be any liberty for you boys cause you'll be going home by then.
Topper: Who the hell is that guy? Perryman: That's your momma and daddy for the next thirteen weeks.
Paula: You know something, you ain't nothing special. You got no manners, you treat woman like whores and if you ask me you got no chance of being no officer.
(Upon graduation) Foley: Congratulations Ensign Seeger. Seeger: Thank you, Sir. Foley: Gunnery Sgt, Ensign Seeger, Sir.
Mayo: (while hoisting and securing the "morning colors," Zack glances up at the barracks' orderly-room. He notices a stone-faced Sid coming down the steps, in street clothes, escorted by Foley) ... You didn't kick him out, did you? Wait, sir! Didn't he tell you what he's been going through? Foley: (not even looking at Zack) It doesn't matter what he's been going through; that's what bartenders are for. What DOES matter is that he freaked out for SOME reason at twenty-five thousand feet, and that can't happen. Period. Mayo: (pleading) ... There's this girl he's gotten pregnant, and she's putting him through hell, sir. Worley: (sharply) He's right, Zack. It doesn't matter. Mayo: (dumbfounded) Just like that? It's all over? With less than two weeks to go, you're out? Foley: (turning and staring at Zack) It can still happen to you too, Mayo-naise.
Mayo: (after discovering that Sid has hung himself) ... Sir, this officer candidate requests permission to see you in private... Sir. Foley: (gently) ... Mayo, the whole class already knows about Candidate Worley, and we're sorry. Mayo: Oh, I'm sure you are.
Foley: (his first cadence, for Zack and the other OC's) ... Sergeant Foley, can't you see; A Puget Deb is after me; Please don't let her catch my tail; I'd be better off in the county jail... ! My mom was a Deb, my grandma too; That's all them gals know how to do; She'll catch my butt before she's through; Sergeant Foley, it's up to you!
Foley: (his second cadence, for Zack alone) ... Candidate Mayo's strutting in the dirt; Look at his face, he's starting to hurt; Here he is, thinking he's a great big star; But before too long he's gonna D.O.R.; Seen guys like you a hundred times; I'm telling you, Mayo, I'm one of a kind; Gonna give you more than you can take; I'm gonna watch you crumble and watch you break!
Foley: (his way of welcoming Zack and Company to OCS) I don't believe what I'm seeing! Where you been all your lives, at an orgy? Listening to Mick Jagger music and bad-mouthing your country, I'll bet... (to Perryman) Foley: Better stop eyeballing me, nigger boy. You're not worthy enough to look your superiors in the eye! Use your peripheral vision, or I'll rip your eyeballs out of their sockets and eat them for breakfast! Understand? Now, when I say "Understand," I want the whole group to say "Yes, sir!" (shouts) Understand! Hey, folks, we ain't stupid around here. We know why most of you come here. But before you get to sell what we teach you over at United Airlines, you gotta give the Navy six years of your life. Lots of things can happen in six years, including another war. And if any of you are too peaceful to dump napalm on an enemy village where there *might* be women and children, I'm gonna find that out. (shouts) Understand! (to Sid) Foley: You said, "How are *you*?" I am not a "ewe," boy! A ewe is a female sheep! Is that what you think I am, boy? Where are you from... Oklahoma? Only two things come out of Oklahoma - steers and queers. Which one are you, boy? I don't see no horns on you, so you *must* be a queer! I expect to lose at least half of you before I'm finished. And I will use every means necessary, both fair and otherwise, to trip you up! That is, to expose your weaknesses... both as a potential aviator *and* as a human being. The prize at the other end is a flight education worth $1,000,000! But first, you gotta get past *me*.
Foley: (cutting-room-floor exchange between Foley and Seeger; as Foley is inspecting the cadets' belongings for the first time, he holds up a pair of lacy panty-briefs belonging to Seeger) ... Are we gonna have to watch you run around in these for the next 13 weeks? Some girls will do almost anything to get laid, Seeger. Are you one of those girls? Did you put in for NOCS to get gang-banged, Seeger? Seeger: (stung) Sir, I understand you're supposed to yell at me. But are you sure it's necessary to insult me, sir? Foley: (hard) Is it NECESSARY? Necessary or not, I will call you a BEAVER SANDWICH if I feel like it! I will call you ANYTHING I SEE FIT, until and unless they commission you an officer, which will obligate me to call YOU "Sir!" If you find me INSULTING, Seeger, you had best DOR right here and now. If you find me INSULTING, I can guarantee the Navy's not for you... Because you're gonna hear ten times worse out in the fleet!
(first lines) Mayo: (whispered to sleeping father) Hey. (flashback to Manila) Byron: Hey, kid! Are you Zack? Young Zack: Yes, sir. Byron: I'm Byron; nice to meet you. Come on, let's get your bags, OK? Young Zack: Yes, sir.
(last lines) Lynette: Way to go, Paula! Way to go!
Foley: You can forget it! You're out! Mayo: Don't you do it! Don't! You... I got nowhere else to go! I got nowhere else to g... I got nothin' else.
