Glad Rags to Riches
1932
Nell: Why doesn't my sweetheart come and save me from this vile place?
Director: Your dance was terrible! Nell: I cannot go on, I'm so tired of it all! Please let me go. Director: I will hold you here! Until you decide to marry me... Nell: No, no! A thousand times no! Director: So you spurn my offer of riches and fame! Then you'll stay right here and pay!
Elmer: Excuse me, officer, I'm looking for my sweetheart from down on the farm.
Nell: Elmer! Elmer: Nell! Nell: Sh, I cannot talk here. He is watching. Come on with me.
Elmer: Alas! That I should find you in a pit of inequity. Nell: I'm in his power. Please save me. Elmer: Okay, Nell.
Director: Where is that man? Nell: There's no one here.
Director: I love my wife, but oh, you tempt!
Nell: (singing) 'Tis sad when you think of her wasted life, for youth cannot mate with age. / Her beauty was sold, for an old man's gold. She's a bird in a guilded cage.
Nell: Unhand me, you!
Elmer: Darling, let us put the past behind us and start our lives anew.
